This piece was a long story even though it came out of a collection of short stories. It was interesting to me to read about a blind man’s perspective on life. The story was told from the man whose wife worked and developed a long time relationship with this blind man named Robert. I suppose the story is trying to emphasize the view on life without sight. Robert comes to visit the lady that worked for him after so many years of keeping in touch through tape recordings. This was their way of communicating due to his lack of sight. It was interesting how she would describe her life story to him by sending him recorded messages. The guy that is telling the story is not comfortable with Robert coming to visit them. He tries reasoning with himself and his wife about how to deal with this blind man. After he spends some time with the Robert, is when he gets a new understanding on life. He starts to see things in a new perspective in a way. The story is called Cathedral because he gets this understanding by trying to describe to Robert how a Cathedral looks like and he can not do it. So Robert has him draw a Cathedral while holding his hand. He then asks him to close his eyes and asks if he can see it. I guess that is how we all are. Until we get led by a blind man we do not see the world through a different set of eyes or lack of them. What I got out of this short story is that we should try to look at art form in different perspectives. Let say we may take away the sight or the hearing or the sense of touch and so forth. Only then do we begin to understand how beautiful art really is, or life around us in general.
