Cathedral - Raymond Carver
This piece was a long story even though it came out of a collection of short stories. It was interesting to me to read about a blind man’s perspective on life. The story was told from the man whose wife worked and developed a long time relationship with this blind man named Robert. I suppose the story is trying to emphasize the view on life without sight. Robert comes to visit the lady that worked for him after so many years of keeping in touch through tape recordings. This was their way of communicating due to his lack of sight. It was interesting how she would describe her life story to him by sending him recorded messages. The guy that is telling the story is not comfortable with Robert coming to visit them. He tries reasoning with himself and his wife about how to deal with this blind man. After he spends some time with the Robert, is when he gets a new understanding on life. He starts to see things in a new perspective in a way. The story is called Cathedral because he gets this understanding by trying to describe to Robert how a Cathedral looks like and he can not do it. So Robert has him draw a Cathedral while holding his hand. He then asks him to close his eyes and asks if he can see it. I guess that is how we all are. Until we get led by a blind man we do not see the world through a different set of eyes or lack of them. What I got out of this short story is that we should try to look at art form in different perspectives. Let say we may take away the sight or the hearing or the sense of touch and so forth. Only then do we begin to understand how beautiful art really is, or life around us in general.

My Final Project Narrative
My big idea for the final project
is to capture the historical buildings in the Columbus, Ohio area. The reason I
chose this is because I enjoy embracing architectural structures, mainly
buildings. Different eras have their own style of architecture and building
materials. I am thinking of capturing the minor details of a historical
building and how different cultures played a role in them. For instance we see
the Masonic structures that have certain traits to the building, such as the
cornerstone being laid in the Northeast corner, traditions and different
symbolism. Some symbolism would be a checked floor, sacred geometry and numerology
incorporated into the building.
In
doing some research about the Columbus area, I found it difficult to focus on
all the historical buildings. So, I decided to document the oldest buildings of
Ohio State University. I think am mainly going to focus on Orton Hall on the
historical and symbolical aspects of my project. I would also like to use Hayes
Hall and University Hall as a reference for the building materials used. These
three building were constructed during the same time period and that is why I
would like to use them in contrast. So, in order to accomplish these ideas I
need to take some photos, do some historical research and put it all together.
My final product would consist of a slide show of the pictures and some sort of
textual explanation of my work. I believe I could carry out this with a simple
movie editor, putting my photos together. More to follow…
So to finalize my project I did a slideshow movie. I combined the pictures I took and some other pictures that I found on the internet. I also added an old song that was written about the same time period as the building was built. The music is a bit more recent though. I captured Orton Hall as building of historical and creative value.

| TO SCATTER AND TO FOLD |
I would like to explain my process of doing this. First as I said before I wanted to take folded laundry and scatter it everywhere. Well, it turns out going to random stores and taking pictures of folded is much easier and more fun. I went to a few department stores, and didn't like the picture turn out. Then I stoped at the Men's Warehouse and it worked out great, I thought. At first I came in with a phone camera and told one of the associates what I was doing. It was all good with them, then another guy came up to me asking me what I was doing. So I told him and he said ok, let me know if you need some help. With what taking pictures? Finally, the third guy came up and told me I had to stop what I was doing and get out of the store. He let me keep the pictures and just said for future reference they do not allow photography inside their store. I was a little disappointed but their was another cool store near by. It was a book store. I went in their and messed up some books in a few places, took abunch of pictures and got out. I don't even think anyone noticed me. So that was a fun project for me, or at least the photography was fun.

David Foster Wallace commencement address at Kenyon College
This article was rather interesting in having discussion of our daily lives. It was like a story told from part of a book instead of a commencement speech. I understood it telling the students to prepare for the working life after college. It had some interesting ideas or metaphors. In the beginning he tells us of the two young fish passing the old fish. The old fish as them how the water is and they say to themselves, what the hell is water. I think the metaphor here is how the younger generation does not pay attention to its surroundings. Most of us don’t pay attention to others during our daily routine activities. As he notes, we travel from work exhausted from the day and then get up and do it again the next day. We mainly focus on ourselves during our busy lives. It reminded me of a subject from a philosophy lecture about Egoism and Individualism. We think of ourselves more than we do of others. For instance he says the guy in his story had to run to the grocery store to get some items for dinner. The guy is rushed through the crowded store to wait in a long checkout line, thinking of himself. It is only when he has the time to stop and think for a second when he notices others just like him trying to do the same thing. Maybe they are in a bigger hurry, as he notes the Hummer that cut him off in traffic, or the lady in line that need to tend to her husband. I think we ought to stop and think of others sometimes. It gives us a perspective on life ignoring the mundane things that we go through. I see this article relating to the previous on brushing our teeth. I become more aware of my surroundings when I stop to ponder on what’s going on around me at the moment. I see things in a different perspective and maybe notice something out of the ordinary. I would like to start noticing in this new light to see an artistic side of life around me. I would like to use this to create some form of art form. After all, truth is about life before death.

My Failure
To describe my failure for this
semester, I chose not to focus as much on the failure part as on the challenges
I faced. I see failure as something I did not accomplish or got totally wrong.
So, my biggest challenge came in doing Micro Project 4, Identity and Sound. I
faced difficulties in editing short film, compiling sounds for this film, and
making it all work together. I had to learn how to edit film in iMovie, EZVid,
and MS Movie Maker. I had to learn how to bring in sound to Garage Band and
Audacity. I have tried editing sound in another program before, mainly just
slicing and cutting out silence and noise. In this project and in using these
new programs it was a bit different. I learned a good deal of information while
doing this project. I learned how to put different clips together to make a
film. I have wanted to learn this for some time now, but had not challenged
myself. I learned sound editing in many new ways that I haven’t faced before. I
learned the concept of putting a movie together and have much respect for movie
editors now. One of my successes was putting the blog together. I actually have
wanted to get into blogging a while ago. This class had challenges and I faced
them with success. I now know much more about blogging and design. I want to
continue blogging, especially my art blog. I have learned a great deal of ideas
on different kinds of art form. So, my goal is to continue my art blog and use
it as part of my daily activities. I want to continue to capture forms of art
and share it on my blog. I think it should be fun, just as my blog name says ‘Art
is Fun’.
If I had to do a project over again, I
think I would like to have done more editing in Photoshop. So either the
mapping project or the small objects projects, I would do a bit different. At
least I would spend more time on the editing portion of it. One of my problems
is trying to be a perfectionist at everything I do. I think it holds me back
sometimes from accomplishing things in a timely manner. In my opinion failure
is not a setback. If you fail at something it gives you an opportunity to
improve. It helps us to get better at whatever we are trying to accomplish.

Identity and Sound
Can You Hear It Now?
The place that I usually visit is Kroger grocery store. I picked this place because it is different from other usual places I visit. I actually wanted to try to use the Library as one of the places. The reason I couldn’t use the Library was I couldn’t get permission from public relations to film there. Then I pondered about it and couldn’t find many sounds that remind me of being at the Library. So, I chose my favorite grocery store. I still had to get permission from their public relations without a problem. When I walk in to Kroger I hear the automatic doors opening up. I pick up a shopping cart and start to roll. The rolling of the shopping cart reminds me of being there as well. As I walk through the different isles and stop by certain areas, I hear different sounds that remind me of being at a certain point in the grocery store. For instance in the deli area I hear the sound of slicing machine, paper wrapping and weighing of goods. When I walk by the vegetables I could hear the water come on and spray the vegies to keep them fresh. In the refrigerant section I hear the humming of refrigerators keeping the milk, cheese and eggs cold. Also, the coolers remind of the similar noise. As I open up the door of a cooler, the refrigeration noise becomes louder. Another noise that reminds me that I am there is the intercom. I walk around the store and listen to the background music playing or a voice would come on stating a sale of something or calling the manager to the front register. The final noise that reminds that I am at the grocery store is the scanning of the goods at the cash register. The beeping sound is the noise that reminds me that I am done shopping and ready to get out of the store and head home. I hear the sound of the doors opening on the way out. As I walk towards my car I hear other cars driving by and maybe some alarms of people opening and closing their cars. This is an interesting project I enjoyed playing around with the video and sounds. Video to follow...

Art Which Can’t Be Art
In this article I did not find an art form. I didn’t see how this Kaprow was referring to brushing his teeth as an art form. He went on and on about his routing in the morning. Brushing his teeth mainly, but also looking at himself in the face and washing his face. He makes a point that these routine things we do every day are habits that we don’t pay attention too much. I on the other hand pay attention when brushing my teeth. I guess everyone is different if we talk about brushing teeth. I read somewhere that most people do not like to look at themselves when brushing their teeth. They close their eyes even and try to hurry up about it. I like to enjoy brushing teeth. After all most of us only do it twice a day, some do it more often. The thing I liked about this article is it made you think of other boring routine things in a different perspective. We as humans develop habits after repeating the same thing over and over, day after day. Now when we stop and take a look around and notice things we don’t normally notice, I suppose you can create an art form from that.

Feet in Smoke
I have no idea what this article had to do with art. This article was very passionate about a brother’s love for another, and it was only his half-brother about 7 years in difference. The first part of the story was about the incident his brother had being electrocuted with a microphone and a guitar. I’ve been shocked with electricity while working with hot electrical wires. It is not very pleasant. I can imagine what being electrocuted and passing out into a comma would be like. In the story the younger brother explains how his older brother’s brain would be all out of whack. How it was almost like an acid trip, but in a different way. The whole experience, of the story, went from tragedy to tragicomedy about half way. The notes the brother and father kept about his sayings were pretty funny. I can imagine what a family would go through dealing with this. I am glad everything worked out in the end; I mean the brain returning back to its original functionality. Even though the older brother still did not remember what had happened to him. The memory wasn’t there. But I still wondered about that when he started crying in the hospital and the younger brother asked him why. He had a recollection of being dead. So, somehow he had a sort of an outer body experience maybe that people talk about. Overall I didn’t like the story, although I thought it was funny at times. For one it didn’t relate to art in my opinion. Another reason I didn’t like it was the tragedy that occurred. I prefer not to read up on these sorts of things. I have seen enough of my own sort of tragedies and try to keep my mind occupied with positive thoughts and events.

Chapter out of "Speaking With The Angel" by Nick Hornby
Nipple Jesus
In this article, the writer tells a story of a controversial picture of Jesus on the cross. The story teller is the bouncer, whose name is Dave, which is hired by the art museum to protect it. While reading this story, maybe because of the way the bouncer talked. All I could picture was Henry Rollins being this bouncer. He also said his father was Irish that added to the toughness I guess. I enjoyed this story as a whole. It was very easy to follow and understand. I enjoyed the hidden meaning of the picture. It was this nice girl, as Dave describes, who was very sweet and didn’t look like she would do such a thing. This guy was very funny at times, at how he describes events. In the end it turns out the point of the display was to film it. The film was the real artwork, as the girl describes. Dave got a very boring job afterwards guarding an onion. This big bouncer that has been stopping bar fights is sitting in an art gallery. I suppose the artistic view on all this is that art is not always what it seems to be. Many see it in a certain way but the artist intended it to be something else.

Now I am going to tell you how this picture makes me feel. Well, I think this picture shows my identity by showing you how much I think Starbucks is Wellness + Extra Care. Also, that I can do the things I do, Just For Today. I love my BMW and my Android. I like listening to music as well, except I don't care too much for the iPhone-iPad. There is always a light shining on us. My battle budies are there for me (they even protect my gum from intruders). Now on what this doesn't tell about me. I think it doesn't show my kids and my wife because they weren't with me or else I'd put them in here. It also doesn't show the other activities I like to do. I don't know what else, I leave it for you to decide.

Wexner Art Center
The Wexner Review
After wondering for some time now, since I’ve been at OSU, about what was the Wexner Art Center? I finally got to see the inside of the museum. I was a bit curious, so I did a little research on the place. Turns out the place is named after a big name of the Columbus area. Les Wexner, the CEO of Limited Brands (including Victoria Secret and Bath and Body Works), was the big contributor to building this center. Les is an OSU Alumni, but the place is actually named in honor of his father. Les actually bought a Van Gogh painting for the museum, but I did not see it on display while visiting. The first thing I looked was the “The Box” by Dan Halter. I thought it wasn’t enough; it should have had something else to it.
The exhibition that drew my attention was the Omar Fast’s, “5000 Feet Is the Best”. It was a little weird in the way it was filmed. It seemed to me that the guy that is being interviewed was delusional. He would go into one hotel room and come out, then go into a different room, and so on. He shows us the dividing line of memory and truth and the confusion it plays in our daily lives. I really enjoyed the story behind the movie. I remember the guy behind the blurred view saying, “It seems like a video game to me, at times I have to sit and watch one house for 11 hours at a time and that is a long game that is hard to win”. I think it was something along those lines. Also, I can relate to some of the instances he mentions because I was there a few times myself. In a way it brought back some of the feelings and memories I have. I also watched the CNN reel. The room they set up was really cozy; it felt like I was at home. The pieces of news words he put together were interesting and at the same time confusing to follow at times.
The next exhibit I looked at was the
Alina Szapocznikow. It didn’t
appeal to me as much. She used different mediums to construct sculptures, which
were mostly of people. The thing that stood out to me was that she was a Holocaust
survivor. She had a hand sculpture that was dedicated to the Warsaw Ghetto. I
guess the other sculptures just didn’t appeal to me as much. At the end I
stopped by the gift shop and looked at the books about the exhibits. The Omer
Fast book had really interesting photography in it. You could see very
emotional expressions on the faces of war. Overall it was a good experience to
see these exhibitions and finally see the inside the Wexner Art Center. I will definitely
have to visit again.

Big Ideas and Artmaking
I enjoyed reading this article due to it being kind of a lecture or helpful information on the subject of the big ideas in art. The article had all these examples of big ideas that one uses in their art form. I liked the dreams and nightmares example for some reason. I supposed it would be a broad area to choose from, because everyone has many kinds of dreams. Unless the artist decides to focus on a particular reoccurring dream that doesn’t go away. That would be interesting and I suppose it would fall into a nightmare example. There was a differentiation about a big ideas, themes, and subject matter. An artist theme could be the big idea as well or it could be different. Now a subject matter is the topic while the big idea is the concept. The article talked about an artist named Jennifer Bartlett. Her subject matter or main focus was on gardens, but that was not her big idea. Her big idea is the exploration of the use of rules and systems. I remember something about the rules and how they are in place for a reason at times, and at times they are there to be bent or broken to achieve your big idea. I also, enjoyed the exercises at the end of the article that used creative thinking to illustrate some of the topics discussed.
Interpreting Connotations in Visual Cultures
In this
article the discussion was on interpretation of the connotation and denotation
in artwork. An artist has a big picture in mind when creating the art piece. Using
different ways to show images in the artwork, the artist makes the viewer think
of ideas when viewing the work. In other words the viewer has an insight of
cultural beliefs and ideas about what each piece would mean. Then the viewer
puts it all together in a big picture and interprets the meaning. At least this
is how I understood the point being. Another view of this visual understanding
comes together when there are words and symbols present along with a picture or
a photo. Looking at The Rolling Stone magazine one sees the Sexy Girls mentioning
of Rock-N-Roll and the Dalai Lama. The article noted that it was obvious that
codes were open to some and closed to others. This is because of culture, age,
gender as well as being knowledgeable with current and past events. Some people
know about Power Puff but not about Dalai Lama. Thus it is apparent to decode
and interpret in a wide diversity of cultural backgrounds. On the other hand
the artist or magazine, in this instance, is focusing on a particular cultural
and age group. I have learned that the design of anything that is a product
needs to grab someone’s attention. One thing that grabs our attention is sex.
The other attention grabbers are different colors, and some phrases that a
culture is familiar with. I believe that an artist does need to keep their
audience in mind when they are making the art piece. Although in my opinion many
artists do not do this, because they are just being creating I suppose.

Trying to blog
Well I just wanted to write a few word here using my phone. I just downloaded the blogger app on my Droid to test it out. It seems fairly simple to use. I also think it's very practical to put up some blog entries in this manner. I had a slow time starting out trying to blog. Now I have a good understanding of it and I'm starting to enjoy this experience of blogging. Who knows I might make it a part time job or a hobby of mine. I hear you can make some money blogging, so I just might have to try it. What do you think of this idea, please leave some thoughts or ideas for me.

Micro-Assignment 2, My Thoughts on Getting to Class
Today, the 27th of June, I got to school by driving my car. I usually leave between 8 and 9 in the morning. Today when I came outside at quarter till nine, the sun was already blazing hot. I actually noticed the heat and the bright rays of sunshine, that usually I tend to miss. As I got in the car, I felt great about my journey and the things I would notice along the route, as well as walking to class. So, I started at Main St. in Hilliard to head towards the highway. I noticed the calm of the wind and the silence of the street noise, at least at the start of the trip. As I neared the highway, the roads became more congested with traffic, thus the noise level increased and became more noticable. I entered highway 270 that's currently under construction. I paid attention to the people in their cars and what they were doing. I saw quite a few students along the route and others going to work. Everyone seemed concentrated on where they were going, minding their own thoughts. Some would glance back at me as I passed their cars looking at them. Along the highway I noticed the construction crews and the heavy equipment that was moving around. I paid attention to one particular water distibutor that was soaking the new road they were building. It drew my attension because it was really old looking and did not seem to fit in with the rest of the heavy equipment being used.
As I pulled in to the parking lot on campus, I noticed that there weren't too many cars parked and so it was fast finding a spot to park. Then I grabed my things and headed off to my first class. When I was walking along the route to class I listed to all the birds chirping and singing. I didn't notice the birds singing near my residence but now on campus I did. As I walked up the stairs near the maintenance building I paid attention to the cars pulling in to the parking garage. I turned the corner and decided to take a picture of the Oxley's By-The-Numbers Cafe. Because I was facing against the sun, I decided to hide behide the light pole to get a good picture. I also noticed the sprinklers being on. I am not sure if they are usually on or not at the same time in the morning, but I think it was the first time I noticed them watering the grass. So, I decided to snap another photo. As I took the photo, I noticed a bike in my view that was laid down. Most of the bicycles you see are usually chained standing up. This one was chained laying down, so I took a photo of it as well. I continued walking and along the way I had to pause because I smelled garbage. I noticed there was a dumpster near by the sidewalk that usually don't pay attention to. As I neared McPherson Lab there I decided to stop near the Memorial Tree with American flags sticking out of the ground. I usually notice this memorial stone dedicated after a fallen soldier in the recent war in the middle east. I like to stand in brief silence for a moment and remember the sacrifice that not only he, but numerous other, paid for our freedom. I took a snapshot of this as well. As I finally reached my first destination, I felt a cool breeze hit me when walking inside the building. After my first class was over I steped outside and noticed a squirrel running by the door. I stood and watched what it would do. It looked at me for a second and as I started to take a picture, it leaped away onto a ledge nearby. When I looked at the photo later, it looked like the squirrel was leaving the building. I thought it was a nice action shot. I also noticed these two love birds sitting near by hugging each other. I decided to take a photo of them, because it looked like they were so in love. I then started to walk to my second class and noticed the construction zone. There was no construction going on though. It just looked so empty and in peace. I took a photo and went on in to my Art class. I enjoyed this project so much. It gave me a chance to experience my sences like at no other time. It was good to pay attention to the surroundings and snap a few photos.

Kidd the Cheese Monkeys
Hickey The Heresy of Zone Defense
Weschler Uncanny Valley
In this article I really did not understand what exactly was going on. There were several short explanations of certain ideas the writer was trying to relate. I think the overall point might have been to show us the different ideas of art forms. The way the article was presented was difficult to follow. I believe one of the reasons this happened, at least for myself, was the pages were all from different chapters of the book. I did enjoy the way the writer explained the different points of view. He talked about left to right, top to bottom, and big and small on a two-dimensional plane and the front to back as in a three dimensional plane. The difficulty I faced with this article was some confusion. This was because of going from one idea to another. One disadvantage of this was possibly this being the first article I read. I did not know what exactly I was looking for. Another difficulty was trying to figure out what the enemies had to do with. I had to go back to the beginning and re-read but still couldn't figure it out.
Hickey The Heresy of Zone Defense
This article was particularly interesting in the sense of the history of basketball. I did not grasp the concept of how this relates to art form. This article was simply written and easily read in my opinion. I was wondering throughout the article what the story in the beginning was going to relate to. I did not find it relating much at anything. I think the concept the writer presented was the newly found game of basketball and the rules that had to be addressed. So, when the game originated it had very few simple rules. I think the creation was just to get the kids indoors and moving. When basketball caught on, the rules had to be modified to prevent and alleviate some things. One of the interesting thing it alleviated was the guarding the goal at all times. It made people move around the court. I also liked the change of dribbling the ball. For us today it seems like it wouldn’t be basketball without the dribbling the ball. I can only imagine how it was in the beginning. One guy has the ball and is taking it down to the other end without ever dribbling it, like a football player does. There wasn’t much difficulty in this article. Like I said before, I was looking for the beginning story to fit in somewhere and missed it somehow. What I did get from this article is the rules are set in place for one reason or another. As it relates to art, the rules can be bent in ways to fit your style, to get outside the box.
Weschler Uncanny Valley
This article was particularly too drawn out in my point of view. I did enjoy reading this story about the facial expressions in the animation and filmmaking. The writer also talked about the robotics and the facial expressions being the key to the soul. I know we have come along way in making robots learn like children do in a way. I can relate to the facial expressions by using different muscles, as I just finished reading the book “Blink”. In that book there is a chapter that talks about how each muscle of the body has an interpretation like nothing else. This allows, I believe just around, 500 trained people in the world right now to watch a subject and know what the subject is thinking and if they are truthful or not. In Japan, there is a robot still in development, that can read human facial expressions. When I was reading this article about animators and actors, these are the two concepts I kept in mind. Another interesting idea the writer brought up was having animation completely take a leap in another ten years. Where the computer can be programed to do an emotion and without taking up 5 hours per frame, perform this task. Now from the other book I read, it said the trained person still can not hide his thoughts and emotions when he is trying to fake his facial expressions. But when you program the computer to do it and have the robot evaluate it, I believe it might be very genuine concept. To touch on another point, the soul is absent in the machine/robot. Unless you are a Japanese follower of the religion that all things have a soul. This was a little difficult for myself to grasp. From what I can understand the robot can be programed and taught all the things as a human could learn, even more. But I don’t see a robot having a soul because it can not feel the human emotions. I am not sure how this article relates to art form, so that was another difficulty for me.

Formal Communication
Micro-Assignment 1, My Thoughts
The similarities with the first ten pictures and the second ten I would say are they both express your creativity as a phographer. The differnce is the complexity of the work. In the first ten you are free to express your artistic point. Where as in the second you are bound or resricted by sertain criteria. I enjoyed the first process better because it gave me freedom of expression as an artist. The second was a chalenge of bringing new learned ideas onto the canvas or the photograph. I had to use more of my imagination to create the second ten pictures. My faviorites are the up close pictures and the ones that are assymetrical. Overall I enjoyed playing around with the subject matter.

A bit about myself
Hi my name is Sergey. If I must tell you a story about myself, I shall start with my place of birth. I was made in the USSR. I was born in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. I came to America when I was 11 years of age, and picked up on English in about six month. I have lived in numerous places across the U.S., partly due to my military service. I have traveled far and wide from the hills of Tennesse to the plains of Texas, to the Ozarks of Missouri and the cotton fields of Georgia. While serving in the U.S. Army, I lived in Heidelberg, Germany for three years. That was a great experience being back in Europe almost 20 years after I left my home country. I traveled once more, to every country I could reach to across Europe. I even went back to my old hometown to see how things changed. I am married to a wonderful Ukrainian girl, that I met in Tennessee out of all the places. She is actually from the same city and neighborhood as I am from, go figure how I managed that. I have two wonderful boys and the latest addition to my family is my lovely beautiful girl, who was recently born this year. I try to explore many avenues and some alley ways. My interest range to many different places. I enjoy playing a pickup game of soccer, I play the guitar whenever I can, I like reading books and watching documentaries. I always try to learn something new whenever possible. The internet is a great place for that, from blogs to YouTube and then some. Although, it is hard to find useful information on the internet at times. Currently I am studying at Ohio State University the subject I love most of all, Engineering. Even-though, I have been a Civil Engineer in the Army and have experience, I decided to study the field since I do not hold a degree. I figured there is always something else I could learn. I plan to have my own Engineering firm one day soon. What else can I say about my self that would interest you. I do speak another language fluently, which is Russian and Ukrainian. I also know some German and I would like to learn Italian as well. I enjoy translating using my native language. I also like to meet people from other countries and learning about different cultures. I think that's enough about myself. Now it's your turn, tell me what interested you the most and if you have anymore questions for me.
